Eric Bejarano, Chapter 9, Question #5

I was most fascinated by the part where the Wheelan discusses the concept of GDP and how it can be deceiving if it is not calculated correctly. Take for example China, whose GDP is in the trillions. Although China has produced trillions of dollars worth of goods and services their success has come at the cost of the environment. China has 16 out of the 25 most polluted cities in the world. The cost for all of Chinas's pollution reaches the billions. Other errors in using GDP include the problem of population. Like China, India produces trillions of dollars worth of goods and services. However, the problem comes from the fact that their population off sets this. By dividing the GDP by the population you get 2900 dollars a year per citizen. Which leads to India's inability to fight disease and combat severe poverty in their country.
