Eric Bejarano, Epilogue, Question #5
I most enjoyed Wheelan's discussion of our public school system. Education in America has always been a topic of interest for me. Wheelan explains that teachers are given no incentives to make their students succeed because they never are recognized. However they are criticized if their students fail. That dilemma often times makes teachers strive for mediocrity. They will never want to put in the extra effort to help a student succeed because there really is nothing in it for them. That being said many teachers do in fact find joy in teaching so they will go the extra mile to help. If a teacher knows that they only have to do "average" to keep their job they will never take risks. The result is a failing education system that politicians everywhere are trying to resolve.
