Adam Rikkers, Chapter 3, Question #5

I found the passage about smoking to be interesting. Specifically that smoking can have both positive and negative externalities. The negative externality is that the secondhand smoke can harm the other people that are around the smoker. But the positive externality is that they die slightly younger than the rest of people who don't smoke, so they can't collect all of their social security. Obviously people dying is not good, but in this case, it can have a positive effect on other people. This was interesting because first of all I never really thought of something having both positive and negative externalities, and secondly that smoking could have any positive impact at all.
