Paula Todhunter, Chapter 8, Question 5
I found the teacher certification subject really fascinating. I think it's pretty weird that the transfer from private to public has to be so difficult. The fact that people with a lot of experience teaching wouldnt be able to teach in a public school without jumping through hoops. And the same thing applies to college professors. While I understand the teachers are very important and that they need to be qualified to teacher, I think that if someone has worked for years in a teaching position, they'd be pretty well qualified. The study done in California had interesting results. The two outcomes of the study stood out to me: "good teachers matter" and "certification doesn't matter" (Wheelan 182). Of course good teachers matter, because students need to obtain information in a interactive and memorable way. The second result shocked me a little bit. The study didn't show a significant difference between the grades of students with certified teachers and those with uncertified teachers. This is really interesting to me and makes me think that maybe certification requirements are a little too strict.
